What to Wear to a High School Reunion (and What Not to Wear)

The high school reunion—dreaded by some, eagerly awaited by others. No matter how you feel about it, when that invitation arrives, it usually brings a mix of anxiety and nostalgia. What on earth do you wear to an event filled with people from a chapter of your life that’s long closed?

It seems like reunion details are always vaguely written, leaving us to fret over every possible detail, including the dress code.

Whether it’s a chance to catch up with old friends, show off how much you’ve accomplished since graduation, or just a reason to take a break from daily routines, your reunion should be enjoyable. And yes, you might be celebrating your 10th or even your 30th, but the number doesn’t matter as much as how you feel stepping into the venue.

So, how do you dress to impress and still stay true to yourself? Let’s break down the dos and don’ts and give you some outfit ideas to spark your shopping spree.

Avoid Going Over the Top: Dress to impress yourself, not just others. If you love wearing miniskirts, go for it. If high heels aren’t your thing, don’t force yourself into them just for the reunion—you might end up sitting out the dances or, worse, taking a tumble.

Consult with Friends: Unsure about the dress code? Touch base with friends who are also attending. If you all coordinate, you’ll feel more at ease, and your group photos will look great.

Stay True to Your Style: Understand what fits and flatters your body, and more importantly, what makes you feel good. When you’re comfortable and confident in your outfit, you’ll naturally have a better time.

Consider the Venue: No dress code provided? Dress for the venue. A local bar gathering calls for something more casual than a country club or ballroom event.

When in Doubt, Wear Black: The little black dress (LBD) is always a safe choice. It’s flattering, effortlessly chic, and suitable for any venue or event.

Navigating your high school reunion doesn’t have to be a stressful ordeal. With the right outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident, you’ll be set to have a great time, catching up with old friends and maybe rekindling some old connections.
