5 Steps to Include in Your Skin Care Routine

Applying your skincare products in the right order can significantly impact how effective they are, making or breaking your routine. Whether you stick to the basics like cleanser, toner, and moisturizer or have a more elaborate routine, getting the sequence right is crucial.

Here’s why: even the best products won’t work if they’re not absorbed properly. To ensure your skincare regimen is on point, follow these five steps:

Step 1: Cleanse Your Skin
Start with cleansing—clean skin sets the stage for everything else. Cleansing removes impurities, makeup, dead skin cells, and dirt. Choose a cleanser that suits your skin type; options include water-based cleansers with surfactants and oil-based cleansers that dissolve excess oils. You can also try the “double cleansing” method, using both types.

Step 2: Apply Toner
Toners help balance your skin’s pH and remove leftover residue, leaving your skin prepped for the next steps. They also minimize the appearance of pores by clearing dead skin cells around them. Steer clear of toners with high alcohol content, especially if you have dry skin. To apply, either tap a little toner directly onto your face with your hands or use a cotton pad.

Step 3: Use Eye Cream
The skin around your eyes is delicate and prone to puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines. A good eye cream can help brighten, firm, and smooth this area, though it won’t completely erase aging signs. Use your ring finger to gently tap a small amount of eye cream around your eyes. If your regular moisturizer is gentle enough for this area, you might not need an extra product.

Step 4: Apply Light Face Oil
Light oils should go on before heavier creams because lighter products absorb better when applied first. Facial oils are great for locking in moisture, especially if you have dry or flaky skin. To apply, warm a few drops of oil between your fingertips and gently press it into your skin. Let it soak in fully before moving on to sunscreen. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, you might want to skip this step.

Step 5: Moisturize
Moisturizers hydrate, soothe, and soften your skin. Choose a product that matches your skin type—thicker balms or creams for dry skin and lighter gels or fluids for oily skin. Warm a small amount of moisturizer in your hands before applying, starting at your cheeks and working upwards with gentle strokes.

Following these steps ensures your products work their best, helping you achieve healthier, more radiant skin.
